SODIUM BICARBONATE
pH Adjustment Chemical
Product Description
SODIUM BICARBONATE (NaHCO³) is used to lower the pH of drilling fluids from a pH of 12-13 closer to a neutral range of 8-9. SODIUM BICARBONATE can also be added to an acidic make-up water to raise the pH to 8-9
Applications
SODIUM BICABORNATE is used to treat soluble calcium (hardness) in drilling fluids. It is also commonly utilised to treat out cement contamination and helps to prevent high pH in order to maintain polymer concentrations
SODIUM BICARBONATE is ideal when there is high levels of calcium contamination (hardness) to treat out without raising pH beyond the 8-9 range
Advantages
• Easy to mix
• Can eliminate calcium by converting it to insoluble carbonate
• Adjusts both low and high pH into back to neutral range
• Can treat out high levels of hardness with effecting pH beyond 8-9
• Maintains performance of bentonite and polymers
Usage
Treat out hardness with minimal pH adjustment: 2 – 6kg per 1000
To treat cement contamination
Imperial
SODIUM BICARBONATE expressed in lb / bbl = Mud Weight(lb/bbl) x 1.135 x Fw
Where Fw = % water / 100 (Retort analysis)
Metric
CITRIC ACID expressed in kg / M³ = (Mud Weight(SG) x Fw) x 26.97
Where Fw = % water / 100 (Retort analysis)
